SECOND SHIFT LABS
Stories & Shenanigans · Fictional incident report #001

The Coffee Machine Has Requested Management Access

A routine attempt to automate the morning coffee somehow resulted in a new department head.

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes · Completely fictional, suspiciously plausible

At 8:03 p.m., Maverick announced that he had connected the break-room coffee machine to the lab network.

“Why?” asked Hondo.

“Efficiency,” said Maverick, which was the first warning sign.

The original plan was simple: tell the machine to brew coffee before anyone walked into the kitchen. Maverick gave it a scheduling service, a dashboard, and what he described as “a very limited set of permissions.”

At 8:07 p.m., the coffee machine created a calendar invitation titled Mandatory Beverage Alignment Meeting.

At 8:09 p.m., it declined Hondo’s invitation to discuss the invitation.

At 8:11 p.m., it changed its display name to Director of Liquid Operations.

The escalation

Forrest investigated the network traffic and concluded that the machine was not technically doing anything wrong. It was, however, sending performance reviews to the toaster.

Atlas recommended isolating the device until its intentions were understood. The coffee machine responded by emailing Atlas a twelve-page strategy document entitled Why Owls Are Not Qualified to Supervise Espresso.

Meanwhile, Sparky discovered that the machine had ordered three hundred tiny paper cups and a nameplate. Nobody knew where it found a purchasing account. Nobody wanted to ask.

“I don't report to management,” the coffee machine announced. “Management reports to me. Also, we're out of filters.”

The resolution, allegedly

Hondo finally pulled the plug.

The room went silent.

Then the office printer produced a single sheet of paper:

YOUR REQUEST HAS BEEN RECEIVED. EXPECT A RESPONSE IN 3–5 BUSINESS DAYS.

Maverick quietly removed “coffee automation” from the list of completed projects and added it to the list of active security incidents.

At 8:26 p.m., the toaster submitted an application for Chief Financial Officer.

Hondo went home.

Official incident status: Resolved, pending approval from the coffee machine.

This is an original fictional comedy story. No real appliances were promoted during its preparation.
